Ceramic Shield, tougher than any smartphone glass
Nanoscale
ceramic crystals
Enter Ceramic Shield. It’s made by introducing nano-ceramic crystals — which are actually harder than most metals — into glass. Sounds simple, but it’s incredibly difficult because most ceramics aren’t transparent. By controlling the type of crystals and degree of crystallinity, we developed an exclusive formula that maximises the toughness of the ceramic while remaining optically clear. This was the breakthrough that made Ceramic Shield ideally suited for the display. It’s a first in any smartphone, and it’s tougher than any smartphone glass.
Dual ion-exchange
process
Tough is great, but we also wanted to make it scratch-resistant. So, using our dual ion-exchange process we use on the back glass, we protect against nicks, scratches, and everyday wear and tear.
4x better drop
performance
Beyond Ceramic Shield, there’s one more thing that contributes to the durability of the front cover. It sits flush to the edge of the phone, which helps protect it even more. Altogether, we’ve quadrupled the drop performance — the largest year-over-year improvement ever for iPhone.

5G transforms iPhone with accelerated wireless speeds and better performance on congested networks. Now you can download huge files on the go or stream high-quality HDR movies. Without. All. The. Lag. iPhone also has the most 5G bands of any smartphone so you get 5G in more places. And all that speed opens up amazing possibilities for the future of apps.
iPhone makes
the most of 5G
We engineered custom antennas and radio components for high sensitivity and incredible efficiency. Then we gave iPhone 12 Pro the most 5G bands of any smartphone, so you’ll get 5G in more places.
We looked at our entire software stack — from applications to system-level frameworks — and optimised it to take advantage of 5G. For example, many apps can benefit from 5G without using additional power.
Conserves battery life with Smart Data mode
5G on iPhone isn’t just faster, it’s smarter too. When your iPhone doesn’t need 5G speeds, like when it’s streaming music in the background, it automatically uses LTE to save battery life. But as soon as speed does matter — if you’re downloading a season of your favourite show — iPhone 12 Pro jumps to 5G. Of course, you can also choose to use 5G whenever it’s available.
This is just the beginning
We also teamed up with carriers and performed extensive engineering and testing to optimise 5G networks. So far, we’ve seen amazing real-world speeds, along with improved call quality, battery life and coverage around the world. This is 5G, iPhone style.
A14 Bionic is the first 5-nanometre chip in the industry, with advanced components literally atoms wide. Forty per cent more transistors rev up speeds while increasing efficiency for great battery life. And a new ISP powers Dolby Vision recording — something no pro movie camera, let alone any other phone, can do.
Up to 50% faster CPU and GPU than
any other smartphone chip
First 5nmchip in the industry
Up to 80%faster Neural Engine
Up to 70% faster machine learning accelerators
Generations ahead of any other smartphone chip
We went for smaller. iPhone 12 Pro has the first 5‑nanometre chip in the industry. The components are measured in mere atoms, which means the transistors can be packed incredibly close together. So energy flows between them faster — and less of it gets lost along the way. That’s how A14 Bionic boosts performance while saving energy.
16‑core
Neural Engine
11 trillion operations per second
We dramatically increased the performance of our Neural Engine by doubling the cores from eight to 16. That makes intensive machine learning tasks — like applying Deep Fusion to improve detail in your photos — up to 80 per cent faster. We also made the dedicated machine learning accelerators on our CPU 70 per cent faster, so any app can tap into that improved performance across our entire chip.
All-new
image signal processor
4K HDR recording with Dolby Vision
What does all this mean for you? A lot. Big performance gains across the board. Smart HDR 3 for more true-to-life photos. Improved detail in high-quality video, thanks to advanced temporal noise reduction on the new Image Signal Processor. And Dolby Vision that’s actually encoded while you shoot — instead of by pro computers in an editing studio. There’s never been anything like A14 Bionic, and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things you’ll do with it.
The LiDAR Scanner on iPhone 12 Pro measures how long it takes light to reflect back from objects, so it can create a depth map of any space you’re in. Because it’s ultra-fast and accurate, AR apps can now transform a room into a realistic rainforest or show you exactly how a new sneaker will fit.

A detailed depth map in nanoseconds
The LiDAR Scanner measures absolute depth by timing how long it takes invisible light beams to travel from the transmitter to objects, then back to the receiver. LiDAR works with the depth frameworks of iOS 14 to create a tremendous amount of high-resolution data spanning the camera’s entire field of view. And the beams pulse in nanoseconds, constantly measuring the scene and refining the depth map. For AR, that’s a game changer.
LiDAR can instantly understand the surfaces in your space. So AR apps can get straight to work analysing the scene and creating custom experiences.
With a detailed representation of every surface in a room, LiDAR can place content everywhere it should go to look realistic — whether that’s on the curve of your couch, the back of a chair or even your messy desk. That makes AR apps much smarter. For example, if a landscape is being projected onto your living room, the grass will grow only on the floor and spread all the way to the furniture, completely adapting to your space.
A more accurate depth map also allows iPhone 12 Pro to understand which objects are in front of others. So if AR characters run through your driveway, they’ll accurately pass behind your car and in front of the tree — keeping you fully immersed in your experience.
A camera that

Night mode portraits
LiDAR also unlocks advanced capabilities for the Pro camera system, including up to six times faster autofocus in low light. And on the Wide camera, the detail of the LiDAR depth map makes Night mode portraits possible. Now, even in low light, the Neural Engine can render your subject in focus against a beautifully blurred background.
Night mode comes to both the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras, and is better than ever at capturing incredible low-light shots. LiDAR makes Night mode portraits possible. And the Wide camera lets in 27 per cent more light for greater detail and sharper focus day or night.

Camera to the Max.
The bigger iPhone maxes out the Pro camera system. A 47 per cent larger sensor and larger pixels dramatically increase the amount of light gathered on the Wide camera. A new OIS stabilises the sensor instead of the lens so your shots are steady — even when you’re not. And the new 65mm Telephoto camera lets you zoom in tighter on portraits.

New sensor-shift optical image stabilisation
We gave iPhone 12 Pro Max a larger Wide sensor with bigger pixels to gather more light for more detail and colour in your photos. And we engineered a stabilising solution that moves just the sensor, keeping it even more steady than before. That’s sensor-shift OIS, and it’s a game changer.
DSLR technology
at iPhone scale
Until now, sensor‑shift stabilisation was only on DSLR cameras. This is the first time it’s been adapted for iPhone. Whether you’re shooting video of your kids as you chase them around the park or holding your iPhone out the window on a bumpy road, you’ll get more precise stabilisation than ever.
Portraits that
come out at night.
Night mode portraits on the Wide camera give you vivid colour as well as beautiful bokeh that accentuates lit buildings and street lights — any background lights.
Even with a single small light source, LiDAR and our A14 Bionic can render every pattern and texture in the foreground along with realistic colour throughout the room.
Deep Fusion kicks in for low- to mid‑light scenes. The Neural Engine analyses multiple exposures pixel by pixel to bring out unprecedented detail in the magnifying glass, the woman and the wall.
Multiple bracketed
exposures
per image
It starts the same way an HDR photo does. When you take a picture, your camera actually captures multiple bracketed frames at different exposures. To assemble an HDR image, those frames are combined to create the best exposure for your subject, add detail in highlights and shadows, and reduce noise overall.
Millions of pixels
analysed in
real time
Deep Fusion on iPhone 12 Pro goes beyond HDR, running every pixel of multiple exposure frames through the Neural Engine of A14 Bionic. The Neural Engine selects the best parts of each pixel for the best sharpness, colour, highlights and shadows. Then the Neural Engine fuses those pixels together into a richly detailed final photograph.
No other smartphone delivers Deep Fusion. And thanks to the sheer speed of A14 Bionic, Deep Fusion is better and faster than ever. This year, we’re excited to bring it to every camera, including the TrueDepth camera on the front. So whatever you’re shooting, you’ll see an insane amount of detail in your final shot.
Portrait mode,
fine-tuned.
Machine learning on iPhone 12 Pro is even better at separating the subject from the background. And creative controls let you adjust the background blur and light on faces.
More detail.
In the blink of AI.
Smart HDR 3 automatically refines highlights, shadows and contours. Even at midday, you can see detail in her face and shadows that graduate all the way to true black.
Smart HDR 3 captures every bit of golden hour magic, pulling out all the texture in the rock while staying true to the subtle blues of the sky.
Smart HDR 3 dials in the white balance, and the sea foam holds its shape and definition despite all the motion.
Beyond faces, Smart HDR 3 uses machine learning to recognise scenes so it can bring out the cracks in the ground and the roughness of the hill without increasing noise in the sky.
Advanced
machine learning
To make this possible, we train neural networks, showing them images of different scenes over and over. Just like a human brain, the Neural Engine on A14 Bionic learns to recognise certain scenes.

Intelligent rendering
decisions
The Neural Engine in A14 Bionic instantly recognises and distinguishes buildings from sky and snowy mountains from clouds — even the food from the plate. So it knows exactly where and how to apply contrast or texture, to adjust white balance or to tweak saturation for photos that look like what your eye sees.

First camera ever to record in Dolby Vision
Real‑time
Dolby Vision
capture
Today, Dolby Vision grading is applied across an entire movie in post‑production. It’s a time-consuming process that happens on pro computers in editing studios. Now this huge workflow is in your pocket. To do it, we had to create a whole new way to dynamically provide Dolby Vision tuning to each frame as you go.
How does it work? iPhone 12 Pro takes two exposures and runs them through our custom image signal processor to create a histogram, which is a graph of the tonal values in each frame. The Dolby Vision metadata is then generated based on that histogram. It takes the sheer speed of A14 Bionic to do it in real time.
Dolby Vision
editing on a smartphone
Before iPhone 12 Pro, you couldn’t shoot Dolby Vision — let alone edit it — on a smartphone. Now you can edit all your Dolby Vision videos directly from your iPhone in the Photos app, iMovie or Clips. Or from your Mac with Final Cut Pro (coming later this year).
Start to finish
in Dolby Vision
iPhone 12 Pro, with its insanely fast chip, lets you shoot 4K Dolby Vision video up to 60 fps. Edit easily in all the ways you’re used to. And blast it to your TV with a tap using AirPlay. It’s an amazing experience that can’t be found on any other phone.
iPhone 12 Pro jumps from 8- to 10‑bit HDR recording, capturing 700 million colours for much more lifelike video. Then it goes one better, recording in Dolby Vision — the format used by film studios. You can even edit Dolby Vision video and use AirPlay to see every last bit of the difference on the big screen.

We reduced our carbon footprint. By thinking inside the box.
Carbon savings equal to 450,000 fewer cars on the road per year.
iPhone 12 Pro works with existing power adapters, EarPods with Lightning Connector and USB‑A to Lightning cables. Because there are billions of those out in the world, new ones often go unused. So we’re removing them from the box — across the entire iPhone family. This reduces carbon emissions and avoids the mining and use of precious materials. It also shrinks the package, allowing more boxes per shipment and fewer shipments overall. We’re transitioning our manufacturing partners to renewable energy as well. Altogether, this eliminates over 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually.
To charge your new iPhone, you can continue to use your USB‑A to Lightning cable. Or you can take advantage of fast charging with the USB‑C to Lightning cable now included in the box, which works with existing USB‑C power adapters and computer ports.
